Semiotics

Signifier:
The word (to get you to think) you think.
Example: Rose

Signified:
The image/object that you think of.
Example: (image of a rose)

Denotation:
It is what the sign denotes - say what you see.

Connotation:
The meaning you create to what you see.
Example: A rose has connotations of love and the film beauty and the beast.

Symbolic signs:
Has no resemblance between the signifier and the signified.

Iconic signs:
Looks like the thing it represents
Example: Cycle sign is an image of a bike.

Indexical signs:
Shows evidence of what's being represented
Example: Toxic has the symbol of a skull.
